Canadian company to sue U.S. over MTBE phaseout
Article Abstract:
Vancouver, British Columbia-based Methanex Corp is suing the US government for the planned phase out of methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) in California. The Canadian corporation cited the expropriation and compensation provision of the North American Free Trade Agreement as the basis for its plan to seek damages of $970 million. The amount is what the company projects the phaseout will cost in lost business, loss of return on capital investments and the decline in the global price of methanol.
