The UK government is encouraging architects and housebuilders to develop quality high density projects on existing sites by increasing the height of buildings. The government-produced Sustainable Residential Quality paper shows how existing sites can be altered to provide a higher density of accommodation without the need for extra car parking facilities often required for such amendments. Proposals to increase accommodation density would only work in areas with good public transport.

Kitchen designers are expected to create functional and individual kitchens, which meet the budget requirements of the client. Innovative ideas can often provide an expensive-looking addition, while costing less than expected. The addition of a 40 mm thick granite worktop frontage can disguise the fact that the actual worktop used was 20 mm thick. Ceramic floor tiles can be made to look like slate by design techniques, which cost less than authentic slate.

Sir Norman Fowler is chairman of the National House Building Council and has criticised the government's home ownership policy. The NHBC is the leading insurer to housebuilders in the UK, and new business was down 20% by the fall in housing starts. It is also threatened by rival Zurich Group, the second largest insurer in the world, which is launching a major advertising campaign.
