GEICO adds Internet telephony, instant routing

Auto insurer GEICO Corp of Washington, DC, has awarded AT and T Corp of Basking Ridge, NJ, with a $150-millionm wire and data services contract. The company interacts mainly with customers through toll-free numbers, and thus, is aiming to reduce hold time and improve its Internet services through an upgrade of its telephone system. The improvement features AT and T's OneNet Service which would enable customers to get fast service while online.

Branchless bank reaches $2 billion in assets

Online bank Telebank, a subsidiary of Telebank Financial Corp of Arlington, VA, has reported assets of more than $2 billion in 1998. The branchless bank has 50,000 accounts, $1 billion in deposits and $2 billion in assets in 1998, from 21,800 accounts, $522 million deposits and $1.1 billion in assets in 1997. The company said that half of that growth came from its acquisition of Gibbsboro, NJ-based Direct Financial Corp.
