Cedar, sedum, see through
Article Abstract:
Balancing the environmental issues of house construction with the introduction of high-tech innovations allowed the designers of the Millennium House project to incorporate both wood, glass and steel for the exterior fittings. Heating for the house is provided by a large conservatory which covers the front of the house and converts heat from the sun into solar energy. The oxygen levels of the conservatory are maintained using plants, while a pond maintains humidity levels. The designers incorporated a living sedum grass roof which provides insulation.

No pane no gain
Article Abstract:
The Peabody Trust has made a strong commitment to the use of passive environmental systems, as reflected in its membership of the European Housing Ecology Network. At its six-storey Crescent apartment development in the Docklands area of London, England, for example, it has installed triple glazing and integral venetian blinds on large south-facing windows. This approach, which was found to be no more expensive than external screening, will reduce heat loss in winter and protect the apartments from solar gain in summer.

Swan investors

There is considerable potential for further housing development in the south-east of England, according to Swan Hill Group chief executive and chairman John Theakston. The company is focusing on developing 'premium' homes, with most being in the 90,000-250,000 pounds sterling price range. It is shift towards smaller sites, and is particularly seeking land for five-40 plots. It has developed many new ideas through the construction of terraced townhouses around a marina at Port Solent, near Portsmouth, England.
