Cendant finishes audits, announces deals

Cendant Corp., a Parsippany, NJ-based direct marketer of membership services, has announced the completion of its internal probe into accounting irregularities at the former CUC International. The company posted a much lower net income earnings revision of 28 cents per share or $392 million in 1997, 18 cents per share for 1996 and 14 cents per share for 1995. A $457 million pretax adjustment has also been made to a CUC charge that reduces the cost of one-time charges by 32 cents per share. Meanwhile, the company states that it will discontinue its publishing and software businesses and focus more on divisions that fits its business model so as to generate more cash and boost weak stock.

Dell in tie as top PC seller, report says

Dell Computer Corp. of Round Rock, TX, is in tie with Compaq of Houston, TX, as the leading PC seller in the US, according to a recent report made by International Data Corporation. The company reportedly seized a 14.3% of the market when it shipped 1.143 million units in the second quarter of 1998. The market share figure is up 9.1% in the same period in 1997. Dell's 1998 second quarter shipments surged 72% over 1997, while its total PC shipments for 1998 jumped to 10% over 1997. Meanwhile, Compaq shipped 1.157 million units in the second quarter of 1998, and saw its share increase from 14.3% to 14.4%.
