Chill winds
Article Abstract:
The production of chloroflourocarbons (CFCs) will end by 1995, making refrigerants used in many air conditioning plants unobtainable. Building owners will be forced to buy new plant or adapt existing machines. This will prove expensive. Replacement refrigerants, R123 and R134a are toxic and not necessarily suitable for all installations while the more popular HCFC R22 is also ozone depleting and will be phased out. Plant suppliers are promoting conservation of existing CFC refrigerant but the best course is likely to be complete replacement of plant.

Built to blast
Article Abstract:
CAD (Computer Aided Design) software to help designers assess potential bomb damage (BombCAD) has been acquired under licence by the Royal Ordinance Security from the US firm Lorren Corporation. The software is based on the Intergraph PC CAD Microstation. BombCAD allows accurate prediction of likely damage caused by any number of bomb blast events. Once the operator has modelled the building layout, materials and furniture placements the output provides a colour coded damage report which includes risk to life.

Taking the arty line
Article Abstract:
Some architects fail to appreciate the impact buildings have on their surroundings, according to Dr Bernard Rimmer, construction manager of Slough Estates. He trained as a structural engineer, but has developed a strong interest in architecture over recent years. He believes that architects tend to lack commercial realism, and often fail to begin from a visual aspect. He believes that his company has always operated to a much higher design standard than others involved in developing industrial buildings.
