Directive is a rod for employer's backs
Article Abstract:
The Manual Handling of Loads Directive requires employers to reduce the need for people to handle heavy loads and to assess the risk to health when handling is unavoidable. The Directive appears to require risk assessment in general circumstances rather than for every load, however, it will be onorous for employers and they should take note of all standards and guidance. Development in conservation areas has been considered by the House of Lords which ruled that development is allowable when it does not harm the character or appearance of the area.
