Florida dealers win figh over use tax
Article Abstract:
Florida boat dealers are now allowed to promote their boats in boat parades, fishing competition and other public events without paying use tax. The battle about use tax started when a 43-foot sportfisherman of Allied Marine Group was offered for use in the 1993 Arthur Smith/Evinrude Kingfish, Dolphin and Wahoo Fishing Tournament. The Department of Revenue of Florida levied a use tax on the boat. The issue was brought to the court and in November 1997, the Florida's 4th District Court of Appeal ruled in favor of Allied. The court ruled that a tournament vessel should not be taxed because the promotional effort of the dealer is broader than just the involved specific vessel.

Article Abstract:
Q Lube Inc., a subsidiary of Quaker State Corp., has opened new centers in Clearwater, FL, and Long Beach, CA, to offer marine fast lube services. According to the company's president and chief operating officer, Kirk Umphrey, the company selected the two areas because they are major year-round boating markets. Umphrey said that the company will continue to refine its procedures and train management personnel for more Q Lube Marine Service operations in both seasonal and year-round boating markets throughout the US, in the new centers.
