HATs off to Hull
Article Abstract:
North Hull became the first Housing Action Trust (HAT) after the 1988 Housing Act allowed HATs to take over the running of local authority estates. The North hull HAT is spending government grants of 50 million pounds sterling on refurbishment of the 2100 houses on the estate and involves residents in co-operation with public and private enterprises. Other HATs have been slow to materialise with only one other in operation. Four more are planned. HATs have been criticised by housing campaigners for diverting attention from the lack of an overall housing policy.

Picking up the pieces
Article Abstract:
The construction industry will continue some of the functions of the National Economic Development Council's Construction Industry Sector Group (CISG) following the government's abolition of the Council at the end of 1992. The CISG's regular forcasts will be continued by a self-financing agency, while existing research projects will be completed by the Construction Industry Council and the Construction Industry Employers Council. The Department of Trade and Industry is expected to continue a dialogue with industry but the unique forum of the CISG will be lost.

Rising from the marshes
Article Abstract:
A consortium of exhibition organisers, architects and construction companies is proposing to build a 200,000 sq meter exhibition centre on marshland at Rainham, east of London, England. The 600 hectare site has been subject to numerous planning proposals that have all failed. The exhibition centre would be the largest in Britian and would supplement London's exisiting, outdated facilities. Development is dependent on transport links but, if it is given planning permission, may begin in early 1993.
