Toys 'R' Us will create separate E-commerce unit

Toys "R" Us announced that it will make its e-commerce site a separate subsidiary to take advantage of the growing online toy market and gain an edge over the current online leader, eToys. Toys "R" Us will invest $80 mil into the new subsidiary and will buy for $30 mil a 500,000-sq-ft distribution center that can accommodate over $1 bil worth of annual orders. It is laso reported that Benchmark Capital, a venture capital firm from California, invested $10 mil in the e-commerce unit of Toys "R" Us.

Nordstrom promotes new golf line

Nordstrom Inc, the department store chain based in Seattle, WA, is promoting its spring 1999 Callaway Golf Apparel and Footwear private label collection with a minicatalog and a specialty Web site. The retailer also plans to use prize promotion to boost sales of the collection at its 99 stores. The Web site (www.nordstrom.com/callaway) includes a link to the Nordstrom personal shoppers service, but does not support online purchasing.
