Hull firms set for 1bn pounds sterling boom

Article Abstract:

Wright (Hull), Hall Construction, Quibell Group, George Haulton & Sons and Sewell Construction, all construction contractors in Hull, England, are forming an alliance in order to improve their chances of gaining a proportion of the around 1 billion pounds sterling worth of construction work on site or planned in the city. They hope that joining together in this way will reverse the trend of contracts being awarded to large companies from outside the region. One of the main projects is the renovation of Hull city centre, which includes a hotel, retail and leisure facilities.

Nobody should die in an earthquake

Article Abstract:

The use of shock absorbers to cushion the effects of an earthquake on buildings has been pioneered by seismic engineer Ted Piepenbrock, who passionately believes no lives should be lost in an earthquake as a direct result of building collapse. The new shock absorber technique is being included on the new Osaka International Convention Centre in Japan, making the 13 storey building totally earthquake proof.
