The inside story of the 7bn pounds sterling Tube deal
Article Abstract:
The UK government has decided that London Underground will operate the trains on the underground network in London, England. The rest of the network will be divided between three infrastructure companies with responsibility for three lots of lines. Railtrack is set to gain control of the 'sub-surface' lines. It is now expected that Railtrack will not put itself forward for consideration to run further 'deep-tunnel' lines. Construction contractors have expressed concerns about the funding of improvements to the underground network.

Doherty warns of JLE counter-claims
Article Abstract:
The Jubilee Line Extension project for the underground system in London, England, has generally made very good progress, according to project director Hugh Doherty. It now seems possible that three-quarters of the stations will open by Mar 1998, but it will first be necessary to ensure that train control systems are ready. The 2.6 billion project faces additional costs of 500 million pounds sterling, and this may lead to counter-claims being made against contractors and subcontractors.

Doherty defiant over review
Article Abstract:
Jubilee Line Extension Project Director Hugh Doherty still believes that the line will open by spring 1999, despite the fact that US engineering concern Bechtel has expressed reservations about this deadline being met. Doherty believes that Bechtel will naturally be more cautious than those more closely involved in the project. He is willing to listen to Bechtel, however, and does not underestimate the amount of work to be completed.
