Image building
Article Abstract:
The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) is to introduce a scheme to improve the image of building companies. The Chartered Building Company scheme is to start in 1993 with 300 firms expected to join in the first year. The scheme guarantees that firms are run by qualfied people and requires member companies to have professionally qualified executive directors a minimum of 50% of whom must belong to the CIOB. They will also have to obey a ten point code of conduct. Membership fees will be based on turnover and range from 250 to 1,500 pounds sterling.

Public inconvenience: cost overruns caused by poor or mismanaged design seem to be a trait of public sector building projects
Article Abstract:
The Design Council and the Social Market Foundation were the co-hosts at a seminar in London. The Design Council believes that design is a forgotten component in public sector procurement, although shadow arts spokesman Mark Fisher claimed that design would be part of Labour's public procurement strategy document. Both the Design Council and the Social Market Foundation felt that compulsory competitive tendering, service decentralisation and the private finance initiative are all affecting the quality of design.
