In person: Alun Michael
Article Abstract:
Welsh Assembly First Secretary Alun Michael is very keen to bring the different parts of Wales together. He points out the positive changes to Cardiff could be repeated in other parts of Wales. Michael acknowledges the need for foreign investment to help increase the gross domestic product per capita in Wales, which stands at only 70% of the average for Europe. Some observers point out they are not sure if Michael will support construction in Wales against the wishes of the Westminster parliament. He does support the construction of a 10 million pounds sterling new assembly building.

Gonks, gifts and guided tours
Article Abstract:
The UK construction industry has organised a second National Construction Week for Apr 1999. Organisers have tried to address the problems of an earlier week which attracted little media attention. The aims of the week are to raise the profile of the construction industry and to encourage more young people to think about a career in building. The 1999 National Construction Week will have a theme for each day, it will involve politicians, and there will be merchandise and a web site. Organisers have distributed advice on how to make events and site visits more attractive.

Surrey law
Article Abstract:
The success of construction law firm Shadbolt and Co can be attributed to a number of different factors, according to Dick Shadbolt, who founded the firm in 1992. He believes that his experience at leading City law firm McKenna is one of these factors. He feels that being based outside London, England, does not damage his firm's reputation. Indeed, clients like being able to visit the firm easily, and working outside London means that employees do not need to commute, thus making them more efficient.
