Inside knowledge
Article Abstract:
The German firm Sitcom has developed a monitoring system for concrete. The system uses optical fibres that are attached or included into the concrete. The optical fibres are highly sensitive recording a movement of a fraction of a millimetre. Sitcom's innovation has enormous potential for recording deflections caused by corrosion in concrete dams, bridges and nuclear power stations. The first road bridge with sensors was built in Dusseldorf, Germany in 1986. Sitcom has produced a prestressing tendon called Polystal that is made from glass fibre-optic composite strands.

Citex will broker property outsourcing deals and will link with key partners to offer non-core services such as telecommunications and security. Jones plans a further three or four purchases in the period to autumn 1999.
