Market overview
Article Abstract:
The construction market in Scotland is expanding rapidly. Contractors undertook 2.539 billion pounds sterling of construction work in Scotland in the first six months of 1998, of which 1.499 billion pounds sterling was new work. The largest sectors are private commercial and private housing. Tender prices in Scotland are lower than in most regions of England, but experts believe that tender prices will rise by 6% in 1999 and 2000. Contractors report that the number of enquiries has declined, but that the percentage of enquiries being converted into orders is rising.

Yes, yes, but what will it mean?
Article Abstract:
It is not widely believed that there will necessarily be more money for the construction industry as a result of the vote in favour of a Scottish parliament with tax-varying powers. However, the Scottish parliament will be free to choose how to allocate the 14 billion pounds sterling annual block grant from the UK Treasury, and it could decide to spend more on projects which will benefit the construction industry. The Scottish parliament will also administer European Union structural funds.
