National Construction Week makes early impact
Article Abstract:
The media appears to be taking the issue of the UK construction industry more seriously during the National Construction Week public relations exercise being held in April 1999. Several high-profile industry personalities have been invited to discuss the industry on both radio and television programmes. The industry is suffering a shortage of skilled labour which needs to be highlighted and financial help given to improve the situation. Projects to celebrate the Millennium have cost up to 1.7 billion pound sterling.

Bringing food science to construction
Article Abstract:
Colin Dawe, the new head of Haden Building Services, believes that his experience in marketing and management will help to revive the company's fortunes, even though he does not have a construction industry background. The company, which undertakes maintenance and facilities management, had been rumoured to be up for sale, but Dawe denies this. It is likely that he will have to undertake management changes and shed jobs.

Industry poised for the 'super lobby.' (UK construction contractors plan 'Construction Federation')
Article Abstract:
Plans for a UK 'Construction Confederation' which would lobby on behalf of many different kinds of companies associated with the construction industry have gained broad approval from most of the country's leading contractors. This body would employ many of the people who currently work for the BEC, and would have six sub-bodies. It would replace the lobbying influence of the Construction Industry Employers Council.
