Pigment of the imagination
Article Abstract:
It has become less common in the UK over recent years for construction sites to have decorative hoardings. This is mainly because of financial considerations, but some contractors are also concerned that such hoardings could inadvertently portray a negative image or be vandalized. Most site hoardings simply feature the company's corporate logo, with signboards detailing the new homes which are to be made available. However, some contractors are becoming more imaginative again. Wimpey Homes, for example, has a hoarding produced by Trio Graphics at its site in Britannia Village, London, England.

Shock tactics
Article Abstract:
The earthquake which hit Kobe, Japan, and the surrounding area in Jan 1995 destroyed all the city's traditional style low-rise, timber frame houses which dated from before 1960. There was also widespread devasation in areas of newer housing, as many were coming to the end of their projected lifespan and had therefore not been properly maintained. The extent of the destruction was made worse by the Japanese preference for heavy roof structures, which has religious and cultural origins. Designers will now have to consider features which will allow new houses to resist tremors.
