Redundancies for the UK construction industry rose by 12% in 1992; an estimated 136,000 jobs. Future job prospects remain bleak. Many firms do not have any jobs available but just advertise to test the job market. Competition for jobs are high. Many professionals are doing unskilled work to survive and many are thinking of quitting their profession. The future of the private sector is uncertain.

Three of a kind
Article Abstract:
Building industry students graduating in 1992 may feel that the depressed graduate market will prevent them finding employment. However, people with specialist knowledge, such as environment or communications, stand a better chance of finding work. The post-graduate experiences of three students are presented. Their advice to graduates is to be flexible, apply early and learn a language.

UK building industry contractors expecting a skills shortages during strong economic growth are advised to cooperate with staff over training requirements in an effort to retain employees. Employers should offer training schemes wherever appropriate to improve employee relations. The employer must endeavour not to take on too much work in case they fall foul of overtrading.
