Shining example fails to shift the gloomy outlook
Article Abstract:
Design for Recovery was the theme of the 1992 joint annual conference of the Association of Consultant Architects and the Association of Consulting Engineers held in Bath, UK. Ex-developer and ex-architect Roger Zogolovitch who is Pres of the Architectural Association gave the key speech. Zogolovitch blamed the change in the 1987 Use Class Orders, the deregulation of the financial industry and the invasion of foreign investment for the 90s property crisis.

Why Expo '92 shows commercial developer nous
Article Abstract:
Expo '92 is an example of astute commercialism. The exhibitors have to pay high rent and service charges while their pavillions will either be reused as office buildings, destroyed of removed after the event. The site will then become an expensive business park. This hard-headed commercialism contrasts with the deeply ingrained misconceptions about British culture and attitudes. The British pavillion is designed to dispell such misconceptions.

A chill wind blows architects into the Ice Age
Article Abstract:
The 80s boom in the UK was a result of over-building and a failure to embrace long-term strategies. It has led to huge debt and empty office space; 32 million squared feet in London. Cost-cutting undertaken by most corporations in the 90s and foreign investment in China and the Pacific area means that these offices may never be let. Building on such a massive scale will never re-occur. Many architects still face redundancy.
