Should the starving housing market be fed?
Article Abstract:
The housing market has taken over the rest of the British consumer economy so its decline has had a dramatic effect on the country. The housing boom which began in the 1960s was fuelled by uncontrolable forces of inflation and opportunity. Since the manufacturing recession of the 1970s, house buying and associated consumer spending has been the only economic growth area. When, in the 1980s, the government tried to control the market and to reduce inflation, the effects were devastating. Nothing can be done to revive the housing market other than to let market forces regain control.

Brigands sit tight on thier housing hoards
Article Abstract:
The housing market boom in the late 1980s has left the majority of house owners better off and in a position to conserve their gains despite the recession in the 1990s. The highly publicised house reposessions and mortgage arrears have affected only a minority of households. The money spent on housing in the 1980s should have been spent on investment in industry and national infrastructure and cannot easily be taken back from home owners.
