Skill joy
Article Abstract:
A shortage of skilled workers in the UK construction industry has led to some contracting companies finding new ways of ensuring a well qualified and happy workforce. Some new recruits in the industry are receiving training on a scheme developed by building company Kajima in conjunction with Brighton, College of Technology, England. Students are looked after by a construction expert whilst on site and are expected to take on more responsibility than just doing menial tasks. After the first year of the scheme only 4 students were without work, with 7 being given apprenticeships whilst 11 found jobs.

Open house
Article Abstract:
The Rockley House Trust has converted an ordinary three-bedroom terraced house in Barnsley, England, to show how latest technology can be used to greatly improve the quality of life of a disabled person. The project aimed particularly to show that a conventional home can be adapted, rather than disabled people having to live in specially-constructed homes. The doors, lighting, heating and electrical items such as the washing machine are controlled by a unit that combines a standard control tool for the severely disabled with building management technology.
