Taking the luck out of the draw
Article Abstract:
Applications for lottery funding in the UK will benefit from an understanding of the objectives of the lottery agencies. This will enable the presentation of a project well-researched in these areas. Schemes should fit into the planning strategies of their areas and show they will obtain planning consent. Environmental issues should be documented. Local authorities can influence lottery money distribution and they will prefer projects which have a spread of benefits to the area. The project should be clearly and effectively presented with a full financial analysis.

Shame of Newport risks precedent
Article Abstract:
The ability of planning laws to protect Brtiain's listed historic buildings is under question in the market town of Newport, Shropshire. A group of listed 18th Century buildings in the High Street were to be comverted from shops to offices but the developer could not pay for rebuilding work when the structure collapsed in Aug 1989. The local council cannot force the developer to implement the planned work and the buildings may be demolished completely unless the Council can bring action under the Planning Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas Act 1990.

The recycling game
Article Abstract:
The UK government is keen to significantly increase the reuse of previously developed 'brownfield' sites. This would appear to make strong environmental sense, but can bring problems for developers. The most serious potential difficulty is the danger of contamination caused by previous use of land. Furthermore, it is not always easy to obtain planning permission to reuse previously developed land.
