Testing times ahead
Article Abstract:
TM Corporate Services Managing Director Adrian Hollister forecasts that Health and Safety Executive recommendations have increased the value of testing electrical and gas appliances in the UK to around 3 billion pounds sterling annually. Hollister set up his company testing electrical installations to meet the required standards in 1994. Workload and turnover for the company have been increasingly rapidly with Hollister hoping to join OFEX to raise additional funding. Hollister has acquired a contracting company which provides a repair service for companies which fail the tests.

Testing standards
Article Abstract:
There is no specific standard for the testing of cladding and curtain walling in Britain. Cladding is tested to specifications for windows but these are inappropriate for large areas of walling containing many types of joints and panels. A new standard specifically for cladding should be devised based on the British Standards for windows and joints in buildings combined with the Architectural Aluminuim Manufacturers Association of America 501 series. A new standard should incorporate new technology and clear performance criteria.

Smoking out the standards
Article Abstract:
Building regulations coming into force in June 1992 require more use of smoke resistant doors. These are covered by BS 5588 but smoke resistance should not be confused with fire resistance and tests should be carried out under BS 476, Part 31. Making sure existing door sets are smoke resistant is difficult but inspection of hinges and seals should give some indication of performance. The CERTIFIRE quality system is applied to smoke seals and those approved under this scheme should withstand over 50,000 opening and closing cycles.
