Toil and trouble
Article Abstract:
Construction contractors in the UK are often guilty of perpetuating the aura of mystery which surrounds the construction process, according to Jeff Howell, lecturer in construction technology and materials at South Bank University in London, England. He believes that one of his main roles is to convey information about buildings to ordinary people, and his extensive experience in working on building sites places him in a good position to do this. He feels that buildings should be regarded holistically, and dismisses widely-used solutions such as loft insulation.

Planners demand Calatrava redesign
Article Abstract:
Conservation groups have expressed opposition to the shape and height of the City Point project designed for the City of London by Spanish architect and engineer Santiago Calatrava. As a result, planners have now requested developer Wates City to make changes to the design, which will extend the 1960s Britannic Tower and give 63,000 sq mt of office space. There is particular concern about the design of the suspended restaurant in the centre of the building.

Skills shortage pushes up prices
Article Abstract:
Building contractors in the UK are having to increase their tender prices to reflect increased rates quoted by subcontractors. The contractors' costs have risen by 5% in the six months to November 1996 and this trend is expected to continue. A shortage of skilled workers in key trades, particularly carpentry and bricklaying, has allowed workers in these fields to push up the prices they charge.
