UK challenge EC on 48-hour week
Article Abstract:
The European Community (EC) has voted for the introduction of a 48-hour week. The Directive was opposed by the UK. The use of majority voting prevented the UK from receiving further exemptions. The UK need not implement the Directive until 2003 whilst other member states have to implement it by 1996. The Directive was a health and safety measure. The UK Employment Sec David Hunt claims that there is no evidence suggesting that working over 48 hours a week is detrimental to the health. The UK has more employers working over 48 hours a week than in any other EC country; 15.8% of its total employees.

Knowledge is power
Article Abstract:
Some 14 billion pounds sterling worth of construction projects will be offered through the Private Finance Initiative (PFI) during 1998-1999. The UK government set up PFI, in 1992, to encourage private investment in public sector projects. Each project must allow free competition from private sector firms and must represent value for money. Projects are in areas of the public sector which will not be privatised, such as hospitals and roads. Some construction companies have criticised the scheme because making a bid can cost over 1 million pounds sterling.
