Visions of the millennium
Article Abstract:
The outlook for the private and public housing sectors and the prospect of an end to the present housing crisis is linked not only to the end of the recession and the housebuilding slump, but also to demographic and lifestyle changes. The greatest impact will come from behavioural change, with housing demand being affected by factors such as the level of divorce, single parent households and the changes within the labour market. In the 1990s, there should be strong demand for housing, but there must be the political will to push projects ahead.

Homes from the range
Article Abstract:
Housing associations under pressure to reduce development costs are exploring the benefits of co-operating with builders on standardised designs. The idea of standardisation was pioneered by North Housing which used several building firms to develop 1,800 homes from its own range of designs. North retains control of the design while making savings of 20% by use of standardization and serial contracts. Building firms with public housing experience are developing their own range of standardised design and build social housing.

Designed to win
Article Abstract:
There were 168 entries for the 1992 Housing Project Design Awards. Ten percent were from local authorities while the others were equally from housing associations and private developers. Most were new-build projects and the majority were on redevelopment sites. The thirteen winners demonstrate originality, an awareness of the surroundings, and have good-sized rooms. The buildings are attractive to residents and have character.
