When tomorrow comes

Article Abstract:

Customer satisfaction and supplier relationships will be two of the most important elements of construction industry contracting in the future. Suppliers will be assessed to ensure they practice environmental techniques, while their past records will be checked to see if they will make suitable partners. A committment to constant improved performance has been demonstrated by the four winners of awards given out by the 1999 Building Awards committee.

Secret services

Article Abstract:

Concealed bulkheads and vertical wire ducts were used by architect firm Hawkins/Brown when converting a listed Victorian building into laboratories for students of the Imperial College, UK. Cable installations were hidden discreetly in electrical risers, while dado rails were used to cover electrical ducts. The 1.3 million pounds sterling conversion provides laboratory facilities for up to 75 people and took 20 weeks to complete.

The appliance of science

Article Abstract:

The London Science Museum is making an exhibit out of its combined heat and power (CHP) unit in the 45 million pound sterling Wellcome Wing. The new wing opens in summer 2000. The CHP unit is economic to run and eco-friendly, as it reduces carbon dioxide emissions by half. The new system, which was supplied by Nedalo, is expected to be installed throughout the museum by the year 2002.
