Equal opportunities: the ten commandments
Article Abstract:
Employers can take several steps to combat discrimination against women in the workplace, with companies that fail to act against such discrimination ultimately wasting a valuable resource. Employers should urge their female employees to become more self-aware and project a good image of themselves. Career progression should be accommodated on life cycles rather than on a linear scale. Barriers to women should be removed, and women who leave should be asked for their reasons. Women should be properly represented in all areas and a long-term strategy for attaining equal opportunities should be set.

Equality in action
Article Abstract:
UK construction industry managers need to be trained to identify and rectify possible cases of discrimination within the industry, towards women, handicapped people and minorities. Women are under-represented in the construction industry, mainly because of the old-fashioned views held by many senior male executives. Each company must produce an equal opportunities statement by law, indicating a plan of action which should prevent discrimination taking place.

Build without prejudice
Article Abstract:
Addressing the issues of skills shortages in the construction industry is one of four suggestions for the industry's New Millennium resolutions. Other suggestions include multiplication of profits; changing the industry's image; and becoming an employer of choice. The construction industry is advised to start focusing on human resources policies, which have to date been largely neglected.
