Taking the initiative
Article Abstract:
It is vital to take a highly professional approach to private finance initiative (PFI) projects, according to Crown House Engineering Major Projects Director Kevin Doughty. He feels that PFI is a very affordable way of ensuring that facilities such as schools can be constructed more rapidly than public funds would allow. He emphasizes that Crown's prefabrication abilities are an advantage on PFI projects. He believes that PFI challenges and stimulates the company, but that it is also important to remain involved in traditional projects.

Shine on
Article Abstract:
Steve Shine, managing director of London Electricity Contracting (LEC), wants the company to have an annual turnover of 50 million pounds sterling by 2000, against 40 million pounds sterling in 1997. Shine, who began working for LEC when he was 16, has aggressively restructured the contractor, formerly known as the London Electricity Board, reducing the workforce from 450 to 150 and slashing salaries by 25% so that extra investment is available for training and customer service.
