Centres of excellence
Article Abstract:
The concept of promoting collaboration in architecture and design through centres of excellence is illustrated by the proposed Birmingham Design and Architecture Centre. It is generally accepted by professionals that there is a need for consensus in the built environment and to develop environmental education. The Arts Council for England has funded nine feasibility studies for possible centres, focusing on the needs of the local community. There has been a positive response to the Birmingham centre and a charitable trust looks set to be established.

Mounting a comeback?: traditional civic statues have been replaced by abstract sculpture but, asks Peter Jones in his award-winning paper, is the 'man on a horse' set to ride back into town?
Article Abstract:
A survey shows that 32% of planning officers have little or no knowledge of public art and should cultivate a broad view of what is public art, whilst retaining their instinctive sympathy for statues. Sculpture is traditionally figurative, rather than self-referential or abstract, and the public is no nearer to accepting abstract art than it was 50 years ago.
