Curtain call
Article Abstract:
Radio fire alarms are becoming more popular and are especially suitable for historic buildings and those in constant use, such as theatres, as no wiring is involved. Components comprise the control panel, differing types of detectors, sounders and call points, all powered by lithium batteries which can last 10 years. The mains powers the control units and repeater units and battery back-up is from two 12 V batteries. The radio system can be integrated with an Emergency Voice Evacuation System to allow for spoken broadcast giving exact information.

Mains chance: the risk of smoke alarms not functioning in a fire can be greatly reduced by opting for mains powered devices
Article Abstract:
Home Office statistics show that around 70% of smoke alarms are inoperable due to missing, flat or disconnected batteries. The Fire Brigade is concerned about the number of smoke alarms that are not working, and in many areas, social housing specifiers are replacing battery powered smoke alarms with mains powered devices. Specifiers need to be aware of the benefits of mains powered smoke alarms, such as interconnection which provides a broader area of early warning.
