Total quality management (TQM) has been successfully extended to the research and development division at Corning Inc. The company's Research, Development and Engineering Division capitalized on its close relationships with its customers and has made TQM a corporate objective. This emphasis on customer satisfaction, employee empowerment and internal process innovation has resulted in savings in poor quality costs of over $21 million over a four-year period.
