Ringing the changes
Article Abstract:
The UK's professional planning education system has changed significantly since the 1960s, which reflects the changes in planning focus and principles. In the 1960s, the Town Planning Institute, the forerunner to the RTPI, was divided over the question of planning specialists or generalists. Since then however, the RTPI has taken a flexible approach to education guidelines, although it has adhered to the format of core and specialised studies. This system, which includes both discretionary and mandatory elements, seems to meet the needs of the planning profession and the market.

Visions on Sunset Boulevard: the government's decision to wind down the Commission for the New Towns by 1998 has set alarm bells ringing in north east Bucks
Article Abstract:
The government has decided to wind down the Commission for the New Towns in 1998. Its current role is the continued disposal of properties in the new towns, and a large part of its unsold assets are located in Milton Keynes and Telford. The borough council is concerned that the quick sale of remaining land could depress local land values. There are also concerns that the absence of the CNT may distract other bodies working on the social fabric of the new towns.

Exploring themes for the wasteland: whatever the reasons for promoting new settlements as a solution to the housing crisis, they appear to be firmly on the agenda for the 21st century
Article Abstract:
It is predicted by the Council for the Protection of Rural England that 20% of England will be built on by the middle of the next century, and the reluctance of villages to accept new housing, has led to the re-emergence of the small new town concept. Such a scheme has been prompted in Bedfordshire's Vale of Marston, with plans for a new settlement at the National Power storage depot at Elstow.
