The impact of standards on industrial development and trade
Article Abstract:
Standards and technical regulations play a vital role in commerce, trade and the dissemination of technology. However, standards and technical regulations can also function as significant nontariff barriers to trade. There is still only limited participation by developing countries in the international standardization process, resulting in the loss of trade and investment opportunities. Indeed, preliminary United Nations Industrial Development Organization estimates indicate that developing countries lose up to 5% of the total value of their experts as a result of their lack of conformity to international standards.
