Thompson calls for better working relationships
Article Abstract:
Alan Thompson is the president of the Electrical Contractors' Association (ECA), and is keen to encourage employers to use the guidelines of the Construction Industry Board (CIB) to sustain a world class industry. Thompson wants the ECA, through its relationship with the Amalgamated Engineering and Electrical Union and the Joint Industry Board, to study working agreements concerning qualification, working practices and remuneration to unite the requirements for the future of the industry. Unions and employers must co-operate in the process of training to meet European Union standards.

Self employment: is labour working?
Article Abstract:
The number of electrical contracting firms in the UK has grown by 5,500 to over 21,000 in 1996 compared to 1982. However, the number of direct employees has decreased resulting in a situation in which 94% of people in the industry are employed in firms of less than eight whilst firms use self-employed workers as hired labour. This is despite the electrical union's support of direct employment. The decline in size also means that firms cannot afford to buy into standards or industrial development.
