What's up ... and down
Article Abstract:
A survey of the changes in the electrical engineering field over the past 25 years reveals only a 3 to 14 percent gain in salaries when adjusted for inflation. The IEEE has almost doubled its membership, the number of publications, and its adjusted budget. IEEE societies have decreased by one; conferences have increased from 30 to 130. Education costs and characteristics changed significantly at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in that period, with annual tuition rising from $1700 in 1964 to $13,400 in 1988, the variety of courses increasing tremendously, and the requirements for graduation offering many alternatives. There is a major trend toward defense-related scientific and engineering research, which rose 30 percent in real terms compared to only a 10 percent real rise for all research and development.

Your name's not down
Article Abstract:
Electrical contractors are best placed to advise security system subcontractors about the most appropriate access control system to use on a project. This information could be passed on to the client without the need for every level of control having to make decisions regarding a subject which they may know little about. The introduction of biometric security systems is set to revolutionize the access control system market, allowing systems to be programmed to give access to people after checking either voice, finger or eye patterns.

Scaling Down Cost
Article Abstract:
A scale, called Port-O-Gram, uses an Intel 8048 microprocessor to control analog-to-digital conversions, drive a display, and convert units of weight. The microprocessor replaced large scale integrated logic to cut the cost of the device and reduce the calibration needed. Calibration constants are transferred from RAM to EPROM when the machine is turned off.
