Human DNA polymorphism
Article Abstract:
The ability to visually represent differences in DNA sequences in a population, a process known a DNA polymorphism, has made possible the discovery of the genetic aspects of many inherited diseases and the formation of cancers. By comparing the DNA sequences of people, differences can be identified and associated with certain medical conditions. Polymerase chain reaction and Southern blotting are both methods to determine the length of a particular sequence of DNA. The length of these sequences can then be compared for mutations that may be associated with certain medical conditions. Advances in the ability to locate and identify sequences should greatly speed the mapping of the human genome, possibly resulting in a wealth of new medical developments.
