Bins, a ban and backyard management
Article Abstract:
The city of Markham, Ontario, is continuing to promote its backyard composting program through education outreach activities such as seminars, demonstrations and the distribution of free composters and compost. The seminars provide lessons on backyard composting and instructions on how to build different homemade composting bins made from plastic or wood. As a result of these outreach programs, the participation rate among the city's households has increased, and in 1997, 5,300 of the 67,000 tons of municipal waste were processed using backyard composting.

Taking the deconstruction road to C&D management
Article Abstract:
The Oregon-based company DeConstruction Services manually dismantles buildings and sells recovered materials, diverting up to 350,000 tons of refuse from Portland's waste stream in the three years since it opened for business. DeConstruction routinely recycles 85% of materials from each of its projects, and is able to remain competitive as it does not have large overhead costs from expensive demolition equipment such as bulldozers.

On-site grinding and recycling of home construction debris
Article Abstract:
The Georgia Department of Natural Resources' Pollution Prevention Assistance Division will perform a cost-benefit analysis to determine if size reducing and reusing wallboard scrap, gypsum, and wood residuals is competitive with landfill disposal.
