Cuts in state programs, regulations

Article Abstract:

Several states are planning to discontinue their waste management and recycling programs to reduce costs. States such as Maine and Virginia will continue to meet their recycling and waste management goals, but not at the expense of maintaining waste management authorities or deriving funding from local taxes. Meanwhile, in Oregon two laws have been passed that exempt packaging manufacturers from producing containers composed of at least 25% of recycled products.

The fragile state of glass

Article Abstract:

The glass recycling market has been showing a lackluster performance as a result of the losing prominence of glass in the packaging sector. Glass is facing strong competition from plastic and aluminum packaging, and has been on the losing end because of high transportation and material costs. However, the more sophisticated image of glass bottles as well as their adaptibility to design changes are keeping the material afloat in the beverage industry.
