Executive order and proposed bill will boost biobased products and bioenergy
Article Abstract:
A US executive order of Aug 12 1999 should help speed up support for clean energy sources and alternative technology using products from agriculture and forestry. Congress has to approve funding, and both main parties support similar goals. Meanwhile, the Department of Energy has announced over $13 million awarded in grants to help the biomass industry to develop, and help cut costs involved in using biomass for products, such as benign plastics, fuels and energy.

Biomass inventory and bioenergy assessment
Article Abstract:
Washington study shows that the state produces over 16.9 million tons of underutilized biomass that can generate over 15.5 billion kWh of electrical energy. It is indicated that a huge mass of underutilized biomass is capable of producing large amount of electrical energy through anaerobic digestion, which would fulfill only half of the residential electrical consumption of the state.

Wastepaper as a bioenergy resource: researchers explore the possibilities in bioconversion of used paper into fermentable sugars and ethanol
Article Abstract:
Researchers at the Medical University of South Africa's Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry are exploring the bioconversion of waste paper into fermentable sugars and ethanol. Fungal and bacterial microorganisms contain a cellulase enzyme system that hydrolyzes cellulose to release sugars that could be used to develop biofuels, such as ethanol.
