Markets improve for recycled plastics
Article Abstract:
The acute market shortage of commonly recycled resins such as polyethylene terephthalate and high density polyethylene highlights the improvement of markets for recycled post-consumer plastics. The shortage depends on several market factors such as the increased use of recycled plastic in manufacturing, the increasing cost of raw materials, improved exports and regulations requiring the use of recycled products in packaging. Price hikes of recycled plastics due to these factors have forced the expansion of the recycled plastics market.

Compost facilities diversify and build markets
Article Abstract:
The municipal recycling of yard trimmings and other diverse organic materials has grown rapidly, with the recycling efforts expanding to include materials other than leaves, which were the primary focus initially. The recycling efforts of several agencies are discussed, including the Blue Stem Solid Waste Agency in Cedar Rapids, IA; the Atlantic County Utilities Authority in Pleasantville, NJ; and the largest curbside program in the US, conducted by Los Angeles, CA.

Meeting the challenges of fish composting
Article Abstract:
Hoover Aquatic Farms began composting in 1993 to dispose of its huge quantities of dead fish and processed fish parts. Hoover encountered several composting design problems, particularly concerning moisture and odor control. Eventually, Hoover installed BioPlate to optimize leachate collection and aeration. Hoover also uses positive aeration to mitigate odors. The company is currently testing a custom designed rotating digester made from a 10,000 gallon drum.
