India may accept lead batteries

Article Abstract:

India is considering a proposal to allow imports of lead scrap into the country and studying whether it has adequate facilities to process the material as a way of addressing increasing domestic demand. The state banned lead scarp imports in the mid-1990s in accordance with the Basel Convention, which banned international trade in hazardous wastes. India's domestic lead consumption is expected to reach roughly 160,000 tons in 1999, up by roughly 20,000 tons from the 1998 level.

BIR Seeks Definitive Waste/Non-Waste Definitions

Ferrous recovery and recycling association BIR and its allied trade associations conducted a symposium in Brussels and discussed suggestions concerning the definition of what is waste and non-waste within the purview of the European recycling industry. BIT director general Francis Vey recommended a case-by-case guidance document which would present succinct interpretations based on exact cases.
