Hitting 65 percent diversion with recycling, composting
Article Abstract:
The Waste Watch initiative was launched in Prince Edward Island, Canada in 1992. The initiative aimed to reduce landfill waste by 70% by separating recyclables and compostable organics. The 26-week pilot project achieved a diversion rate of 62.8%, with waste to landfill reduced by 31 tons. The East Prince Waste Management Facility was opened in 1994 offering a new landfill and composting facilities.
