Taking it all in
Article Abstract:
Great Lakes International Recycling of Roseville, MI, continues to be a major paper recycler but it has distinguished itself from other paper recyclers by being flexible enough to venture into other areas. This include the recycling of scrap metal, plastic containers and electronic scrap. Great Lakes, which now processes 40,000 tons of paper scrap per month, has also instituted a just-in-time inventory system that has reduced its warehousing requirements by 40%.

Making it work
Article Abstract:
Metal scrap firm Commercial Metals Co (CMC) attributes its growth and success to its conservative management philosophy. CMC was founded by Moses Feldman in 1915 in Dallas, TX, and later attained a competitive presence in its regional market. While its growth was achieved through acquisitions, the pace of growth was intended to be within their level of competence. CMC Secondary Metals Processing Div pres Harry Heinkele said that their objective is not to be the biggest but the best and that they value efficiency and environmental responsibility in the management of their facilities.

Moving mountains
Article Abstract:
Cranes and hydraulic material handlers are among the machines used by scrap companies with high-volume operations. These machines are available with several different attachments such as lifting magnets, grapples, hammers and shears. Although these machines are commonly used to handle ferrous scrap materials, they are starting to find recycling applications beyond the scrap yard.
