The economics of the management of the processing facilities of the country's recovered fiber industry have been problematic, hampering their further development. Paper stock plants are usually organized with low capital investments and with the capacity to process highly source-separated materials. There is an increasing trend in the industry which focuses on lessening collection costs and utilizing new methodologies that result in the use of lesser number of trucks and routes.

Asia gears up for renewed growth

The paper industry in Asia is poised for recovery as depressed trade conditions in the region appear to have bottomed out and it is expected to experience a moderate rebound in 1999. Pulp and paper industry players expect business to pick up because the growth of this industry is closely related to the overall development in domestic markets. The potential for growth in paper consumption is enormous because more than 50% of world's population live in Asia.

A recovery in the making

The paper stock industry in North America is bound to see considerable improvements in the market, with paper stock prices continuing to soar as demand remains high. The industry experienced the biggest improvement in the old corrugated market due to higher-than-expected offshore and domestic orders. The market optimism, which is aided by the recovery of Asian markets, also fueled increases of as much as $20-a-ton in some pulp substitute grades.
