Protecting workers at composting facilities
Article Abstract:
Employees of composting operations encounter health hazards due to exposure to substances including pathogens, bioaerosols and toxic chemical substances. The technology and equipment used in the operation have potential impact on these health hazards. Pathogens invade and infect healthy and debilitated individuals. Endotoxin and organic dust are major bioaersols affecting employees' health. Skin and eye irritations, flu-like symptoms and respiratory problems occur frequently among these workers. Measures to reduce exposure risk include personal protection, facility design and operational activities.

Home composting reduces waste
Article Abstract:
Southern Idaho Solid Waste has played a key role in the composting educational program which has been operating in southern Idaho since spring 1994. The free workshops on composting have proved extremely popular, with local people being particularly attracted by the opportunity to purchase a composting bin at a reduced price. There is still strong enthusiasm for home composting in the region, with a further 1,000 composting bins being distributed in 1996 alone. The composting program has made a significant contribution to reducing solid waste disposal costs.

Composting in Colorado
Article Abstract:
Compost plants are becoming more common in Colorado. At the Air Force Academy of the U.S. in Colorado, 10,000 cubic yards of feedstock are composted yearly from materials such as manure, grass clippings, trees and saw dust. Another organization, A-1 Organics, also contributes a big share of state organic recycling, and also deals in marketing compost. Recently, Evergreen Metro Waste-water District has started a plant which has solved the problem of disposing of biosolids.
