Regulating compost quality in Ontario

Article Abstract:

The Ontario Ministry of the Environment released its "Guidelines for The Production and Use of Aerobic Compost" in Nov 1991, after a public review period. The guidelines provide criteria based on quality requirements to distinguish between compost as a product, which has various uses, and as waste, which has to be managed as such. Amid arguments that followed the release of the document, agricultural community representatives appeared receptive to the clear effort to protect the quality of Ontario farmlands, which receive regular doses of compost from municipal solid waste.

In-vessel composting of food scraps at the Ontario Science Centre

Article Abstract:

The Ontario Science Center has opened in-vessel composting system of food waste for the public so that they can understand the method of processing, and mixing. Each part of the composting process can be viewed separately by the public. The waste material consists of wood, paper, sawdust and food wastes which are dumped in bins. It is then placed in a mixer and passed through a funnel at a constant temperature. The demonstration of in-vessel composting system will be conducted for five years to make the people aware of low cost processing operations.
