Superfund crosses the compost line
Article Abstract:
The discovery of the role of compost in soil remediation has opened up new ways of treating soils contaminated with hazardous waste. Compost made from mushroom waste can degrade carbaryl in just two days, compared to fifteen days with microorganisms. Treatment of contaminants with compost is promising, as there is high microbial activity in a composting matrix due to the range of substrates available and the environment in a compost allows growth of a variety of microbial colonies.

The compost story: from soil enrichment to pollution remediation
Article Abstract:
Compost is emerging as a pollution prevention and control tool. Compost's most direct environmental benefits include the diversion of organic material from landfills and the enrichment of compost-enhanced soils. But compost is also useful for erosion control, contaminated soils remediation, and stormwater treatment. Compost's beneficial uses and compost-related technological advances are discussed.

What's needed to use more agribusiness residues?
Article Abstract:
Agribusiness industries make a significant contribution to the Midwest states economies. Their byproducts have an impact on the environment, and successful enterprises have been developed to utilize specific wastes and residues. A study in Iowa determined the types and volumes of residuals generated by food processing companies, and looked at disposal methods and cost.
