Wallboard scrap moves up the reuse ladder
Article Abstract:
Goldston, NC-based Waste Reduction Products Corp manufactures by-products of wallboard scrap generated by mobile and modular home builders in the state. The company relies on an innovative reclamation system to design value-added products from wallboard scrap. The patents for the products are based on zero cost-based refined gypsum recycled from postindustrial waste materials. Company officials believe that wallboard scrap reclamation presents significant business opportunities for gypsum waste generators. They are planning to introduce the initiative into other states.

New reuse options for liquid residuals
Article Abstract:
Fort Worth, TX-based Silver Creek Materials Inc. applied composting to dispose liquid wastes after federal regulations forbid the disposal of liquids in landfills. It operates a 130-ton-a-day composting facility to handle large volumes of liquid wastes, which include sauces, colas, beer and liquors. The liquids are separated from containers using a 'destruction' pad made of clay liner material to prevent leaching into the soil. The solid wastes are segregated for recycling and off loaded into a flotation tank, while the liquids are transferred into a mobile tank.

Building support for sludge reuse
Article Abstract:
New York City formed a Citizens Advisory Committee (CAC) on Sludge Management as a meansof garnering support for its land based program as an alternative to the already outlawed ocean dumping of sewage sludge. The adopted sludge management programs were divided into the intermediate and long term plans. In the evaluation of the CAC, it was found that access to the key staff of the Department of Environmental Protection, technical and administrtative support, the independence of the CAC and the dedication of its members determined the success of the agency.
